What Is The Process?

Explanation of the Industrial Air Compressor process and why cooling is required.

  • When air is compressed, heat energy is absorbed into the air. To prevent overheating it will be either cooled via a heat exchanger and secondary side chilled water or ambient air cooled. If it is ambient air cooled no water cooling is required.

Why Is Cooling Required?

  • Intercoolers - To accurately control the air temperature between stages or before it exits the compressor via a water/air heat exchanger
  • Air Dryers - Some machines have these units to remove moisture by taking the compressed air blow a certain dew point

How To Calculate The Cooling

  • Use 100% of the KW rating of compressor motor

Or

  • Air compressor coil cooler 0.12kW of motor power/3000kcals/hr of cooling
  • Air compressor after cooler 0.14kW of motor power/3000kcals/hr of cooling

What Must The Cooling System Include?

Usually the cooling is managed via an Air Blast Cooler and pump set, but on occasions in high ambient countries a chiller maybe required. The water temperature rise in general across an air compressor is 10oC.
