Jacket Vessel Cooling

What Is the Process?

  1. Using a jacket welded or wrapped around the vessel to cool the internal substance by passing chilled water continuously through the jacket.

Why Is Cooling Required?

  1. To remove the heat inside the substance to the required temperature or to stop the heat caused by an exothermic reaction.

What Must The Cooling System Include?

Pressure in the jacket, if pressure is too high the jacket could split. To overcome this you can install a pressure relief valve or a pressure reducing valve. Jackets should be insulated if cooling water below 10C. The cooling system might have to have a bypass on the chiller or an external tank if cooling from high temperatures as the water could return as steam.

How To Calculate The Cooling

  • Product Volume (y) x ΔT temperature difference (Z) x Specific Heat (kcals/kg°C)
  • ÷ 860 + Agitator motor input = Cooling Duty for 1 Hour
  • If it’s over or under 1 hour then time also has to be taken into account therefore ÷ hours process to take to cool = Cooling Duty in KW
  • Plus weight of vessel kg x specific heat capacity of material of vessel kj/ kg°C x ΔT temperature difference = kcals/hr ÷ 860 Cooling Duty for 1 Hour
  • If it’s over or under 1 hour then time also has to be taken into account therefore ÷ hours process to take to cool = Cooling Duty in KW
