Aqua Service Support Helps Waste Management Facility Get Back Into Operation

The Client –

Midlands based waste management company

The Challenge –

Returning dormant equipment to full operation

The Solution –

Service support, including full re-commissioning

Normally our Service team commission equipment when an installation is completed on site. However, with this particular project, the client was looking for service support to reinstate a free cooling system which had been dormant for a long period of time due to the long term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Situation

The company specialises in the disposal of clinical waste from the healthcare sector at their incineration plant in the Midlands. Annually they process 8,000 tonnes of medical waste.

They had undertaken a significant expansion project at the facility prior to the pandemic. However, once COVID-19 hit, it impacted on progress and the project was severely impacted by supply chain issues and diminishing resource due to isolation.

As a result, the cooling equipment at the heart of the waste management process had lain dormant, until the works could be completed. Equipment included 2 x free coolers, 2 x recirculation pumps and a heat exchanger.

Once the facility was finally operational, the equipment needed attention to ensure it could operate correctly and efficiency.

Solution

After an initial site assessment to determine the best plan of action for the customer, Aqua engineers carried out an in-depth re-commissioning service.

This scope of works included:

  • Draining old fluid
  • Stripping down the plated heat exchanger and cleaning all plates, improving cooling efficiency. Reassembling with new gaskets.
  • Lubricating fan and pumps to improve life span of motors.
  • Chemical flushing of the pipework and filling with the correct concentration of glycol.
  • Checking the correct operation of the isolation valves.
  • Checking operation of free coolers, controllers, and fan operations.
  • Changing pump seals.
  • Calibrating probes and replacing pressure gauges.
  • Checking control signals and operation of external, pressurisation unit.
  • Chemical clean on chillers to improve airflow & cooling capacity.

Results

After a week on site, all the equipment within the cooling system was all in order, ready for operation.

“After laying dormant for so long, the system was in a poor state when we first arrived” explains Aqua Team Leader, Joe.

“It was actually really satisfying taking the equipment apart component by component and bringing each part back to life. By the end of the project, the customer had complete confidence in their system again. We improved efficiencies by cleaning the coils, calibrating the probes, and establishing correct fluid conditions. All this will reduce working hours and power, saving our customer money in the longer term.”
