The Client –
Regional utility company
The Challenge –
Replacement cooling system
The Solution –
Aqua Pro chiller based solution
Aqua recently had the pleasure of reconnecting with a customer we first supplied cooling equipment to 17 years ago. After nearly two decades of reliable service, their original chillers required replacing. This also opened the door to upgrading their cooling system with the latest energy efficient chiller technology, giving them improved performance and sustainability.
Situation
Serving millions of customers every day, our client is responsible for supplying regional drinking water, alongside collecting, and treating the wastewater at the sewage plant before it’s released back into the environment. Water treatment plays a key role in maintaining public health and the environment and it’s at this stage that reliable temperature control is required.
Every time a toilet is flushed, or a sink emptied, the water goes down the drain into a network of sewage pipes which takes it to the local sewage treatment works. The water goes through a multi staged process which cleans it before it is returned to the sea and rivers to re-enter the natural water cycle.
Sewage is treated through a multi staged process, with contaminants and pollutants removed physically, chemically, and biologically. Chemicals used in water treatment help to treat and degrade toxins in the water, killing bacteria which can transmit waterborne diseases such as typhoid and cholera.
One of the chemicals commonly used to disinfect the water is sodium hypochlorite, which is a highly reactive compound. It needs to be stored in a cool, well-ventilated environment, because heat and light degrade it, reducing its lifespan and effectiveness.
Solution
After a site visit and review of the legacy equipment, our design team proposed 3 x Aqua Pro chiller units. Our client stores the sodium hypochlorite in 3 storage tanks, so the cooling system design assigned a chiller to each individual tank.
The Aqua Pro range is designed specifically for industrial cooling applications and the units cope admirably with the harsh conditions that process environments can bring. They have a uniquely designed evaporator which has larger water pathways than normal and is cleanable. This eliminates the risk of blockage and expensive evaporator damage, a really important consideration in process scenarios where water contamination risk can be high.
The chillers operate on R454B refrigerant, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) rate of just 466, 70+% lower than legacy refrigerants such as R410A. Aqua Pro chillers also have electronic expansion valves as standard to maximise efficiencies further.
With the equipment selected, we also needed our installation team to work their magic and to get the chiller units connected and up & running with minimal operational disruption to the sewage plant.
Results
With the new units installed and commissioned, our client now benefits from a more efficient cooling system, which has the added benefit of being a much greener, environmentally friendly solution.
In addition, they have assurance that their chemical water treatment will be stored in safe and stable conditions, ensuring they meet all their regulatory obligations. They also took out a 3 year Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) plan which gives them a proactive approach to chiller service & maintenance and a 3 year warranty.
“We value enduring relationships with our customers and appreciate the trust that comes with supplying equipment – and then replacing it 17 years later. This project is a great example of how we work with clients. At Aqua we’re not interested in quick fixes, for us it’s more about getting the best solution for the customer so that they see great results and stay with us for years to come” explains Aqua Sales Director, Owen Hymers.
