The Client –
Leading UK research facility
The Challenge –
Cooling equipment failure
The Solution –
Temporary equipment rental including chiller hire & fan coil hire
Reliable, dependable temperature control is crucial when operating a data centre. The equipment itself generates a lot of heat and if it’s not carefully removed overheating occurs which jeopardises system performance and can cause costly damage to the hardware. In today’s always-on world, any cooling failure can cause major disruption.
Situation
Aqua’s rental desk took an emergency call from a trade client who was supporting a research facility with their temperature control requirements. The site is responsible for innovative scientific research, providing valuable insight worldwide and responsible for training clinicians and scientists. The cooling system within their data centre had failed and temperatures were climbing with every hour that passed.
Solution
With no contingency plan in place, the data centre needed a temporary solution rapidly, so that the facility could stay operational whilst their existing equipment was repaired by the trade customer. An Aqua engineer local to site visited to ascertain the quickest, most effective way of achieving a consistent temperature between 19°C-21°C.
We despatched a 75kW Aqua Pro hire chiller and 2 x 50kW fan coil units to site, along with an installation team. The units were supplied on a short term fully flexible rental agreement, meaning should repair work take longer than anticipated, the hire could be extended by just one telephone call. The equipment was plumbed in parallel for optimal efficiency.
Our Aqua Pro chiller units are specifically designed for process applications, they have an innovative, cleanable evaporator, operate on a range of low GWP & natural refrigerants, and incorporate electronic expansion valves to maximise efficiency further.
Pairing the free cooling chiller with fan coils achieves a sustained flow of cool air, ideal for keeping large spaces like data centres, warehouse, and other commercial facilities at the required ambient temperature.
Results
With a quick turnaround, our installation engineers were able to swap the data centre over to the temporary cooling system before the temperature exceeded safe operating conditions.
“It really was a case of every minute counts,” explains Aqua Sales Engineer, Ben Hughes. “Without a contingency in place, there was no plan B, it really was a matter of getting the equipment to site and up and running as fast as humanly possible. We do call our engineers the A team, and on this occasion, they really were superheroes!
“But now their research work can carry on uninterrupted and our trade client has peace of mind that this can continue for as long as is needed to carry out the repair works. The initial hire is for 4 weeks but if the works schedule changes business can carry on as normal for as long as it takes.”
