Our design & installation teams love a challenge and a chance to test their technical and expert knowledge by having to think outside the box and do things a little differently. When we were approached to support a London health club the brief initially seemed very straightforward – they simply needed to replace an old, failing chiller unit. However, it soon became clear that this project was far from simple and would need a customised chiller solution.
Situation
The existing, aging chiller unit was being used to support the club’s air conditioning but was now at a point where it was beyond economical repair. The club were keen to locate the new unit into a self-contained basement area of the building, where access, and space, was extremely limited.
It’s not uncommon for London based businesses to have restricted space and access requirements, but with this high-end venue dating back to the mid 19th, it’s layout and design posed additional difficulties.
Solution
After a detailed site visit, our design team quickly established that there was really only one option, a chiller that could arrive at site flat-packed and be built in situ. So, they set to work channelling the design style of a well-known minimalist Scandinavian home furnishings brand!
The chiller was designed to be built, tested, and then broken down into its component parts for transportation to site. Then, it could be re-built in situ and installed along with the necessary pipework, before being commissioned.
Results
“It’s not everyday you’re tasked with designing a flat-packed chiller,” explains Aqua Sales Engineer, Joe Malone.
“But, with the age and layout of the building, there was no way we could get the chiller into the position within the basement unless it arrived in smaller sized component pieces. Luckily for Aqua, we have a fantastic design & installation team who started with a blank sheet of paper yet delivered a reliable, energy efficient chiller, against all the odds. The project took just under two weeks to install and was seamlessly integrated into the existing air conditioning system with minimal disruption to patrons and their guests.”
