Hire Solution Solves Critical Cooling Dilemma

The Client –

Midlands Based Medical Equipment & Logistics Supplier

The Challenge –

Critical Cooling For MRI Scanners

The Solution –

Bespoke Cooling System Supplied On Short-Term Hire

For a medical equipment supplier, our teams’ technical design ability was the driving force behind selecting Aqua Hire as their chosen service provider.

Our client, based in the Midlands, specialises in the supply of medical equipment including MRI scanners. Towards the end of 2020, due to changes in legislation resulting from Brexit, the customer bought forward a delivery of twelve MRI machines. The scanners were stored in a warehouse before needing to be tested and transported to the end user client. Aqua were tasked with designing and supplying a temporary cooling system so that the equipment could be safely and reliably tested.

Inside every MRI (magnetic resonant imaging) machine is a cooling system which contains litres and litres of liquid helium which keeps the magnetic component cool. Within the cooling system itself is a “cold head” which re-condenses the helium. If the helium temperature is not closely controlled during operation, the units will over pressurise with extremely costly results.

Our Engineers designed and built a temporary cooling system consisting of a dry air cooler and manifold which fed the individual flow and returns of the twelve scanners.

The full solution:

  • Site survey
  • System design & build service
  • 250kW dry air cooler
  • Pump & tank assembly
  • 2” flow and return manifold, to feed 12 x 0.5” flow & returns
  • Delivery & installation

“This was a great example of a technically led hire install”, explains Aqua Hire Director, Ben Davies. “For this client, our ability to deliver on application knowledge and technical expertise was paramount. Their plans had changed at short notice and we were on site within 24 hours of their initial call with the project up and running within their required timeframe.”
